Jamaican Justice Review Task Force

Dr. A. Barrington Chevannes

Dr. Chevannes has an A.B. (Philosophy ‘65) and an A.M. (Classics ‘66) from Boston College, an M.Sc. (Sociology ‘71) from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and a Ph.D. (Anthropology ‘89) from Columbia University. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 1996 to 2004 and is currently the Director of the Centre for Public Safety and Justice, Faculty of Social Sciences, a Professor of Social Anthropology and an Alister McIntyre Fellow, Research and Policy Group, all of the UWI, Mona.

For over three decades Dr. Chevannes has been broadly published throughout the Caribbean and internationally, including the publication of four books since 1994. He has presented and lectured at numerous major academic conferences in the United States, Canada, England, Austria, the Netherlands, Grenada, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Dr. Chevannes research, presentations and publications cover a wide range of topics including the status of women and children, male identity in Jamaica, crime and drug related issues in Jamaica and garrison communities.

For his work Dr. Chevannes has received many professional awards, including, most recently, the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research, Teaching, University Service and Public Service (2002), Honorary Fellow, Royal Anthropological Institute (2002) and Visiting Research Fellow, Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, University of Bordeaux III (2003).
