The St James Municipal Corporation has affirmed its commitment to supporting the Victim Services Division, an institution which the corporation says continues to demonstrate strong commitment to rehabilitating victims across the parish.
The endorsement was expressed by Councillor of the Montego Bay South Division, Richard Vernon, who attended Overcomers in Action, an initiative under the purview of the Ministry of Justice through the Victim Services Division.
Overcomers in Action is geared towards providing healing and restoration to females who have gone through abuse and trauma. Under this initiative, group sessions are conducted by professional counsellors who are trained in group therapy.
In representing the political directorate of St James at the municipal level at the ceremony, Vernon challenged the citizenry and other agencies to lend their support to the Victim Services Division and become more involved in the justice system.
“I am very pleased with the dedication of the Victim Support Division over the years. They have been employing creative methods of identifying the victims’ needs, advocating for their rights, and providing therapeutic support. It is for this reason I am urging volunteers to get on board and support them in their mandate to help victims of various crimes,” Vernon said.
The Regional Director of the Victim Services Division, Garey Gardner, also encouraged volunteerism, with emphasis on how critical support is in driving the successful continuation of Overcomers in Action and other initiatives under the Victim Services Division.
The 2019 Overcomers in Action cohort were awarded certificates of participation at the closing ceremony of the training, which was under the theme ‘Put the past behind, live in the present’.
