Kingston, Jamaica. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has been allocated an estimated J$173 million for the construction of a Justice Centre in Sandy Bay, Hanover.
Speaking at the Contract Ceremony held at the Ministry on Friday, October 4, Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck expressed optimism about the project emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that justice services are accessible and efficient for all Jamaicans.
“We intend that access to justice should be easy and not only easy but when you get the access to justice, you can have justice delivered in a very timely manner. It is not only getting justice in the courts but in simple disputes, simple disagreements. We are hoping that citizens can make use of these justice centres,” he said.
The Minister also revealed that the MoJ intends to construct additional justice centres in Clarendon, St Catherine and St Andrew.
Member of Parliament for Hanover Eastern, Dave Brown, who was also present at the event, shared his support for the justice centre, noting that the Justice Centre will significantly benefit residents of the parish.
“I am so happy that Sandy Bay was the place of choice. It is central, for persons wanting to access the justice centre…in the parish,” he said.
C&D Construction and Engineering Limited has been contracted to carry out the construction of the 6825.7-square-foot facility, which is expected to be completed by September 2025.
Once completed, the Centre will offer residents of the parish with access to a wide range of Social Justice services including Restorative Justice, Child Diversion, and Mediation among others. Additionally, the office of the Custos for Hanover will be located at the facility.
This new facility will join the network of 11 Justice Centres across Jamaica designed to improve access to justice services by offering a variety of services in one location; enhancing efficiency, and improving service delivery across the island.
